The busiest time of the summer traveling season in Yellowstone National Park has ended, and with less than 2 months to go, there is a possibility that this year could be the busiest year ever.

The park reports there were 881,936 recreational visits in August 2025.

That’s up 2% compared to August of last year, when there were 868,259 visits, but down 4% compared to the busiest August on record in 2021, when there were 921,844 visits.

As of the end of August 2025, the park has had 3,547,967 visits, which is up 2% from the same time last year (3,494,350), and down 1%, or about 43-thousand visits, compared to the same time in 2021 (3,590,609).

That year is still the busiest year on record for Yellowstone, which ended the year with 4,862,074 visits.

The park says in September, boating services on Yellowstone Lake and various campgrounds start their seasonal closure, and some animals will start to prepare for their upcoming winter hibernation.

Various roads within the park will start closing for the upcoming winter season next month.
