SCSD#3 Board Holds Special Meeting

SCSD#3 Board of Trustees held a special meeting on Tuesday, June 3. At the May meeting, one agenda item was to approve to rescind the approved contract for Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Joslyn Camino, and approve contract for director of curriculum and instruction. Both motions died for lack of a second.

During the special meeting, the board heard comments from several parents and teachers protesting the board’s decision. Dr. Gerry Chase joined the board via the internet, expressing his concerns on the decision. Samatha Grubb, Clearmont parent and SCSD#3 Staff member said that Clearmont was lucky to have Camino, and she felt that not approving her contract would not be a good move for the district.

Kelly Betz, parent, said that Camino helped both her children ‘a lot’ over the years and it was important for her to be in the district. “I support her 100% and it would be a huge loss if she were to leave.”

Ashley Bassett, parent, said she was upset by the board’s actions.

After the audience comments, the board heard the 2024–2025 district data review presentation from Camino, talking about how the district is performing for students and how it has improved in most areas from fall of 2024 until spring of 2025. She talked about the demographics of the school.

One item she felt was an area of concern was the student mobility rate

The board also approved a contract with Montana School Equipment Company for the removal of old bleachers, and installation of new bleachers in the gym for the amount of $127,075.00.

Superintendent Chase Christensen said the bleachers would meet ADA standards, and bleachers on one side would have seat backs, while the bleachers on the other side would not. There was not a big increase in price if both sides had backs on the bleachers.

In other business, the board also approved a contract Excel Coatings for painting of the gym in the amount of $18,930.00. Christensen also presented slides of some ideas for the paint job on the gym, including new artwork on the wall.

The board approved a contract with Clemens Exterior for windows and siding for rental property at 1023 Water Street for $26,830.00, and a contract with Rock Creek Roofing to replace roof for rental property at 1023 Water Street for $11,704.36.

The board voted to approve the resignation of Instructional Coach Joslyn Schiffer-Camino The board then adjourned into an executive session.
