Commission Approves Discharge of Uncollectible Debts

At their recent meeting the Sheridan County Commission has approved the discharge of uncollectible debts from the county rolls.

County Treasurer Carol Grandahl explained the need for the request.

Grandahl explained that the unpaid taxes have been carried by the county for years and that there have been extensive efforts to collect with no success.

County Administrative Director Renee Obermueller said the taxes stem from years of coalbed methane development in the county, with many of these production companies either no longer in existence or in bankruptcy.

According to the Treasurer’s report, the amount discharged by the commission is just over $10.5 million.

What is the write off amount in a percentage of the county total accounts receivables?
Is there a simple answer to why efforts were not made in the early part of the debt when it was past due?
