WYO Film Festival Film Wins Oscar
A film featured at the WYO Film Festival is now an Academy Award winner. “The Singers” took home the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film at the Academy Awards on March 15.
The film screened at the 2025 WYO Film Festival in Sheridan, where it also won the Audience Choice Award for short film.
Festival organizers say they’re proud to have showcased the film before its success on Hollywood’s biggest stage. Executive Director Breton Shepherd says the film made a strong impression with local audiences and stood out during its festival run.
“The Singers” was part of the Mixed Rodeo Round-Up short film block and quickly became a fan favorite. The film tells the story of a spontaneous sing-off in a bar that turns into a powerful shared moment. It’s inspired by a 19th-century short story by Russian author Ivan Turgenev.
Festival leaders say the recognition highlights both the film’s impact and the growing reputation of the Sheridan-based festival. The WYO Film Festival returns for its ninth season October first through fourth, 2026. Film submissions are now open online.
