The Ucross Foundation is inviting the public to tour the artist residency campus, get a behind-the-scenes look at the studio spaces, meet artists and enjoy a picnic outside of the historic Big Red Ranch House, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday, June 1.

The Ucross Founder’s Day celebration is in recognition of its late founder, Raymond Plank.

While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program, Ucross Deputy Director Caitlin Addlesperger told listeners that this is an opportunity for the public to see behind the curtain of Ucross’ operations and creative culture.

According to the Ucross Foundation, Plank, born on May 29, 1922, grew up on his family farm in Minnesota. Although from modest backgrounds, his parents were very dedicated to the idea of education, according to Addlesperger. So Plank entered Yale University in September 1940 but left just three months later, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, to enlist in the U.S. Army Air Corps Reserves.

During World War II, he piloted B-24 bombers, completed 40 combat missions and earned numerous commendations.

After the war, Plank went on to graduate from Yale; form an accounting and tax service. In 1981, Plank founded the Ucross Foundation.

Founder’s Day will allow the public to experience live music performed al fresco by members of the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra; explore the new exhibition in the Ucross Art Gallery, Wyoming Women to Watch; and enjoy a picnic on the lawn. Food trucks will be available as well as homemade ice cream sandwiches made by the talented chefs at Ucross.

Ucross Founder’s Day is free and open to the public. Parking is limited, and carpooling is encouraged. Registration is required, click here to learn more and reserve your tickets.
