Rare cartography on display at the Fulmer in March

Map lovers may want to visit the Fulmer Library soon to get a view of rare hand drawn maps created by a master. Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library is inviting the public to view an exhibit of 35 annotated maps and charts created by Rich Urbatchka during the month of March.

This collection of maps include the weather and climate of Sheridan as well as many hiking locations in the Bighorn Mountains. These maps are first generation copies of hand drawn graphics, using 45 year old technical ink pens on equally aged vellum making them a unique collection.

Urbatchka has earned degrees in Geography with emphasis in Cartography and Mathematics and Secondary Education. He developed his graphic skills in his cartography classes, then at the Kansas University Cartographic Service, and later by creating maps and charts professionally. He has operated and used data from weather, precipitation and air quality stations in northern Wyoming and southern Montana. Urbatchka has also planned and executed vertical aerial photo missions for mapping & environmental studies.  

Urbatchka will give a presentation on the basics of Cartography 5-6 p.m.  Tuesday, March 5, in the Inner Circle, at Fulmer Library.
