Sheridan Memorial Hospital Doctor of Internal and Addiction Medicine Jason Ackerman made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to speak on addiction.

According to Ackerman, his office sees an increase in patients during the winter season and holidays. Ackermans heads the Sheridan Memorial Hospital Addiction and Internal Medicine Clinic. He and his team provide hope and healing for patients suffering from substance abuse and addiction issues. The clinic provides care and medical treatment for patients experiencing opiate/narcotic/methamphetamine addiction, stimulant and alcohol abuse, tobacco, gambling, and other addiction issues.

Alcohol use disorder, like all addictions, is a complicated issue to address with friends and family members. In many instances, one may not even realize they are suffering from an addiction.

Ackerman said he identifies addiction as a loss of control.

Understanding that drinking and drug use often stem from mental disorders or stress, Dr. Ackerman and his team work locally with community mental health professionals, offering a collaboration of services for patients who seek help with addiction.

Ackerman said personal responsibility is key to recovery. Just a few decades ago, alcohol use disorder was surrounded by a sense of mysticism; why do some people suffer from alcohol addiction so quickly while others can use alcohol seemingly without worry? Ackerman said science and medicine is catching up, giving caring individuals like Ackerman and his team an advantage doctors didn’t have in the past.

Ackerman and his team are equipped and trained to treat many different types of addiction and medications under the supervision of a doctor can help ease cravings, helping patients through the recovery process.

If someone feels they have lost control of drinking, there is a way to recover. Ackerman encourages the exploration of options. To learn more, contact Sheridan Memorial Hospital of Internal and Addiction Medicine Clinic here
