Word about the kiln has spread and it’s already drawn a number of potters from all over Wyoming.
During the initial firing, items were brought in from student potters at Sheridan College, Gillette College and the University of Wyoming.
The kiln is located on the southeast part of the Sheridan College campus.
Stephen Mullins says he’s hopeful that the kiln will help generate more interest in ceramics, and keep more people involved.
“There’s a couple of smaller wood kilns in the state of Wyoming, but this is probably not the largest and most unique that we have in the state. There’s some really good ones in Montana, but in terms of Wyoming, there’s none really that are set up to do what we’re really trying to do in terms of building a community, being educational, getting college, high school and adults all together to make ceramics.”
Mullins adds the kiln won’t be used 24/7/365.
Depending on which chamber of the kiln is needed, it will be fired up 2-5 times per year.
