Richard Hoeck

Richard Henry Hoeck was born on February 15, 1922, to Frances and James Hoeck. The young family endured the Great Depression in Baltimore, MD. Later, they made their way to Santa Monica, California, with hopes of a more prosperous life.

As a young man, Richard enlisted in the Merchant Marines during World War II. Holding a critical role as a radio engineer, “Sparks” traveled the world in service to his country. Family and friends still marvel at the fascinating stories of his journeys and will cherish the entertaining way he shared them.

One of his greatest accomplishments while in the Merchant Marines was the birth of his son, Carl, in 1948. After his service ended, Richard and Carl made their home in California. Richard took an esteemed position at ITT in Redwood City, California, and served that company for 46 years.

While in Redwood City, Richard met Florence Gorman. Richard and Carl knew that she was the missing piece to their family, and the two were married. Sometime after, Florence and Richard adopted their daughter, Nancy Bana. Florence and Richard raised Carl and were so proud of his entry into the service. They also devoted themselves to the tender care and development of Nancy. In 1989, after successfully sending his children out into the world, and following the untimely passing of his beloved wife, Richard moved to Sheridan, Wyoming. Richard was blessed with a second love, Maria Elena Thomas. The two met and married in 1991 and had a lovely life together in Sheridan until her passing in 2019. Maria Elena and Richard were devoted members of Holy Name Catholic Church and poured love and support into the Dog and Cat Shelter and The HUB on Smith.

Richard is loved, honored, and survived by his children, Carl Hoeck and Nancy (Mario) Bana; three grandchildren, Maryanne Bana, Michelle (Steve) Agelopoulos, and Veronica (Ty) Cadermatori; and five great-grandchildren, who will miss him dearly. Reflecting on his childhood, Carl tenderly commented, “Every good thing I’ve accomplished can be traced back to my dad.” Showing their devotion to “Dad” and “Granddaddy,” Nancy and Maryanne traveled back and forth from California to Sheridan to care for Richard in his final years. Nancy reminisced, “I came from Bolivia and learned everything from them…how to be truthful, honest, caring, and loving. These things I’ll never forget.” Richard’s devotion to his community will live on and his impact will continue to benefit Sheridan for years to come through his many contributions and personal connections. An intelligent, kind, and generous man, Richard will be missed and remembered by many.

A Visitation will be held at 9:30 followed by the Rosary at 10:00 with the Mass of the Christian Burial at 10:30 with Father Glenn Whewell officiating on Friday, March 22, 2024. A reception will follow in the church hall.
