For even the most experienced Wyoming driver, icy roads can present a challenge

Many times the culprit of automobile accidents in rough weather conditions is found to be speed. Sheridan County experienced 117 car accidents related to speed in 2019, with six of those accidents being determined “Critical” or involving fatal and suspected serious injury crashes. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 17% of all vehicle crashes occur during winter conditions.

While appearing on Sheridan Media’s  Public Pulse, Sheridan County Sheriff Allen Thompson said this time of year the icy roads combined with distracted drivers creates dangerous conditions. 

Thompson asked residents to remain vigilant while driving on icy roads and remove any distractions to the driver. Thompson said even if the limit is posted higher, drivers should only travel at speeds suitable for the roads current conditions. 

But even the most attentive driver can become caught in a slide or spin while driving in black-ice conditions. Thompson told listeners what to do if that should happen. 

Accidents happen, even to the best of drivers. The NHTSA recommends keeping blankets, flashlights, jumper cables, and flares or emergency lights in your vehicle. Even if you don’t need them, they may be used to help someone else in need on the road to help everyone reach their holiday destinations safely.
