SCLT Explore History: The Wyoming Apple Project

Published

on

While many other states are better known for growing apples, with Washington being the leading apple producer in the nation, Wyoming has several species of apples as well.

The Sheridan Community Land Trust (SCLT) invites the public to attend a special Explore History program, The Wyoming Apple Project, featuring a video presentation and discussion with Dr. Jonathan Magby, University of Wyoming graduate and plant physiologist.

This engaging program explores the rich and often overlooked history of apples in Wyoming. From the origins of heritage apple cultivars to the surprising places they were planted across the state, the presentation connects agriculture, geography, and history in a way that brings Wyoming’s orchard story to life.

Participants will learn how apple varieties developed across the U.S. and abroad made their way into Wyoming, why certain locations proved successful for orchards, and how these efforts fit into the broader story of settlement and agriculture in the region.

Two opportunities are available to attend: Wednesday, May 13 from 10–11:30 AM held at The Hub on Smith, Sheridan and again on Tuesday, May 19 from 10:30 AM–12 PM at the Tongue River Valley Community Center, Dayton

The program is free and open to the public.

SCLT’s Explore History series connects people to the places, stories, and landscapes that define Sheridan County and the surrounding region. Through programs like The Wyoming Apple Project, participants gain a deeper understanding of how history continues to shape the land and communities today.
