A decision on the ratification of a permit to allow a fireworks display at the Sheridan Speedway on July 4 has been moved to the Sheridan County Commission’s April 2 meeting.

The permit ratification was on the agenda for the commission’s February 20 meeting, but opposition from adjacent landowners who have livestock on their land prompted the commission to move the decision to allow for a public hearing in the matter to allow all parties involved a chance to discuss the issue.

Rochelle Koltiska, representing Koltiska Cattle and Hay, explained their concerns with the fireworks display.

Koltiska also cited the proximity of the speedway to railroad tracjks, the landfill, and the animal shelters as reasons to not allow the fireworks display.

She also said the speedway location is not irrigated like the former site at the Big Horn Equestrian Center, making a possible fire sparked by the fireworks more likely.

Commission Chairman Nick Siddle recommended tabling the decision.

The public hearing is scheduled for the commission’s regular meeting on Tuesday, April 2.
