Land Trust Discovery Session: ‘The Rocky History of Red Grade Trails’

The Sheridan Community Land Trust’s upcoming discovery session will detail the fascinating geology along the upper portion of the Red Grade Trails in Sheridan County. Land Trust Director of Marketing and Development Chris Vrba says that Geologist Steve Stresky will tell a story millions of years in the making as attendees view prominent feature slike the Bighorn Anticline and Moncrief Ridge, on a hike from Drifter Trail to the First Grade Overlook.

Vrba said that Stresky will teach hikers about the structural evolution of the mountains, the geometry of strata along its flanks, the differences between rock types, their potential for aquifers and how those rock types and aquifers affect the landscape and how it’s used. The discovery session will take place Thursday, August 20 at 5:30 pm. The Land Trust asks that people meet at Springs Trailhead Parking lot (upper lot) at Red Grade Trails, located at the base of the Bighorns along Highway 335. Attendees should wear proper hiking footwear and bring their own water.
