SPD Captain on Recruiting and Hiring

Sheridan Police Department Captain Tom Ringley made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to speak on the department’s staffing, recruitment and what prospective officers should know before pursuing a career with the department.

Ringley said the department looks into backgrounds extensively but also weighs the applicant’s character, ability to make sound judgment and ability to be a strong team player.

Authorized for 31 full-time sworn officers, the SPD currently has 27, with four openings and background investigations underway for two positions.

Applicants must be 21 years of age to apply to be a member of the SPD. Ringley discussed ways younger people can prepare for law enforcement careers with any agency.

Applicants begin with a written examination before advancing through physical testing, interviews, a background investigation and psychological assessment.
