UW’s WyGISC Creates New Public Wildfire Intelligence Platform

The University of Wyoming has reported that the UW Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center (WyGISC) and Department of Ecosystem Science and Management have launched a new public-facing wildfire information platform designed to help Wyoming residents, landowners, emergency responders, utilities and communities better understand wildfire risk across the state.

According to UW, the platform, called WyldFire, was developed with financial support from the Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association and provides data-driven information intended to support wildfire awareness, preparedness and long-term planning.

The University reports that the tool is not designed to track active wildfires, but allows users to assess wildfire risk for locations across Wyoming and evaluate potential mitigation strategies.

Users can draw custom areas on a map, compare wildfire risk between locations, view burn probability and potential flame length layers and generate reports summarizing wildfire risk, vegetation and infrastructure characteristics.

According to the UW story, Wyoming lawmakers passed House Bill 192 during the 2025 legislative session. The law, which took effect July 1, 2025, requires electric utilities to submit wildfire mitigation plans to the Wyoming Public Service Commission. The plans must identify high-risk fire zones and outline procedures for infrastructure inspections, vegetation management, power shutoffs and service restoration following wildfire events.
