Chief of the Sheridan Police Department Travis Koltiska and Captain of the Force Tom Ringley made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to discuss misconceptions the department has received through various interactions with the public.

The SPD understands that many of the residents and businesses of Sheridan have on site cameras that record video footage. Two years ago, the detective division of the SPD began soliciting information in an effort to create a contact list of video sources throughout the City of Sheridan. Doorbell and traditional surveillance video cameras used by residents have helped the SPD in the past and continues to aid detectives in investigations.

Often, the SPD will post footage of incidents turned into them by concerned residents or victims of a crime. The SPD will turn to social media in an effort to learn identities or other information in hopes that members of the public are able to assist in investigations.

In regards to video quality often being grainy or difficult to see, Chief Koltiska said the SPD does not possess any kind of software or technology to enhance video quality.

But not all information is made public during the course of an investigation.

In some instances the release of information regarding an ongoing investigation can cause the case to be dismissed in the courts, potentially allowing an alleged suspect to walk free, wasting time and money as well as the efforts of law enforcement agencies. The SPD also works to protect victims and at times will withhold information that could harm innocent individuals or re-victimize those involved.
