SCSD#2 Board Recognizes Several Individuals

There were several recognitions at the Monday, April 6, SCSD#2 Board meeting, including two WHSAA Good Sportsmanship Awards. One award was presented to Freshman Boys Basketball coach Chris Poniatowski at the opening season tournament in Casper in December.

Activities director Kasey Garnhart said that throughout the sporting season, registered officials across the state recognize individuals that go above and beyond demonstrating good sportsmanship during competition. These officials have an up close and personal connection with the games as they officiate events across the state.

Another award was presented to bus driver Shane Basye who provided the Lander Boys’ Swim Team and coaches with transportation home after their bus became stranded on South Pass.

He then introduced Nordic ski team Coach Falk Alicke who described the incident.

The board also recognized the cast of the spring musical production, “Anastasia” and several board members commented on the quality of the performances.

Scott Cleland talked about the Boys’ State Individual Wrestling State Champions, Keegan Rager and Braxten Crow.

Coach Taylor Kelting introduced the boys’ indoor relay state champions as well as two individual state champions, Ryder Charest and Eli Balkenbush

The SHS Nordic boys’ ski team state champions attended the meeting, and Coach Falk Alicke congratulated them along with Kayley Alicke who was the individual girls’ state champion.

Boys’ basketball state champion team was recognized by Coach Jeff Martini.

Kristie Garriffa talked about the students who achieved the Wyoming Seal of Biliteracy; Kayley Alicke, Korah Condos, Livea Martin-Davis, Olivia Hardesty, Rachel Keegan, Nicholas Matheney, Clara Murray, Aubrey Quarterman, Rosa Lepe-Sanchez, & Eliana Walton.

There were ten seniors that achieved the honor. She introduced SHS Spanish teacaher Rafa Escoto who talked about some reasons to learn another language.

Board Vice-Chair Arin Waddell commented that these youngsters will will better understand other people, and that being bilingual is a passport to the entire world.

Several of the students being recognized attended the meeting.
