SPD Remind Families to Stay Safe on Halloween Night

Published

Halloween has been observed for more than 2,000 years, tracing its roots to the Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of harvest and the beginning of winter. The celebration of ghosts and ghouls as it’s known in the United States began to gain popularity during the 1840s.

Halloween Night, Oct. 31, falls on a Friday this year. The evening will be filled with children in costume seeking treats from homes across Sheridan.

While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, Sheridan Police Department Captain Tom Ringley offered several reminders to help keep young trick-or-treaters safe as they move through neighborhoods.

Ringley encouraged parents to take a few moments with children before heading out to review simple rules for crossing streets safely.

He also urged drivers to stay alert, slow down in residential areas, and avoid distractions such as phones. Reflective tape on costumes or candy bags can help drivers see children in the dark, and choosing face makeup over masks allows kids to see more clearly as they enjoy the night.

As the community prepares for the Halloween fun, the Sheridan Police Department reminds everyone that safety should always come first.
