The Railroad’s Role in the Bozeman Trail Subject of Talk

On June 28th at 1 p.m. at the Fort Phil Kearny Interpretive Center, Mary Ellen McWilliams, along with special guest Mike Koury, will present a talk about titled, “Role of the Union Pacific Railroad along the Bozeman Trail.”

This talk is a part of the Hell on Wheels exhibit now on display at the fort.

The talk will be based on research from the Fort Phil Kearny/Bozeman Trail Association LOOKOUT article addressing the question: Why did the U.S. government build and support the Bozeman Trail Forts. In recent years we explored why the posts were built and to what extent the building of the transcontinental railroad played a role. This became a fascinating subject.

Mike Koury, former President of the Order of the Indian Wars, also wrote an article in 2002 entitled “The Bozeman Trail: Road to the Little Big Horn” addressing the connection between the railroad and the Bozeman Trail.

General state park fees apply.
