Buffalo Council OK’s Contract for Animal Care Services

Published

on

The Buffalo City Council has voted to approve a contract to provide animal care services to the city.

At their recent meeting, the council discussed a proposed contract with the Buffalo Kennel Club, LLC to house and feed dogs brought to them by the Buffalo Police Department.

Later in the meeting, St. Francis Animal Shelter Board President Laura Ulrich (UL-rich) asked for clarification on the city’s contract with the new animal care provider.

In a separate interview, Mayor Shane Schrader explained that the Buffalo Kennel Club is a private entity created specifically to house stray dogs for the City of Buffalo.

He said negotiations with St. Francis Animal Shelter had stalled and the city chose to go in a different direction for the services.

Ask for a copy of the animal sheltering contract and disclose completely what happens to said dogs who are unclaimed after 5 days and unable to be rehomed.

This says nothing about disposition of dogs who are not claimed or cannot be placed in another home. Additionally, how will medical care be handled? It seems this is a very easy way for the city to cheap out on this necessity at the expense and potential peril of the dogs, which are vulnerable. Finally, is this going to be a no-kill facility? This forming of an LLC specifically for this purpose is suspicious at best.

I totally agree with the comments by Randy Groesbeck. These are definitely legitimate concerns. Also concerns me is that the LLC. In this instance I gather would be the ones that totally oversee the conditions not only of the premises but conditions of the dogs on a daily basis. While we all know that there has been an influx of homeless animals due to the cost of living has exponentially put a lot of pressures on shelters in every city and every state, The plus that a public shelter has is that the general population has access during shelter hours and often as much if something is going, awry word gets out. That’s a good thing..
I really wish the city Buffalo should examine this decision from all angles very thoroughly. There is just so much that can go wrong.
