The Sheridan County YMCA has a dedicated mission to provide the means for the community to improve the health of mind, body and spirit.
One practice that works to improve all three of these may appear new-age to many people, although it is anything but.
Yoga originated in ancient India over 5,000 years ago as a philosophical and spiritual practice and as modern science catches up with many philosophies, yoga has been found to have many physical health benefits as well.
According to the American Osteopathic Association, besides the well-known calming effect of yoga, other benefits such as increased flexibility, increased muscle strength and tone, improved respiration, improved energy and vitality, improved cardio and circulatory health and even weight reduction have been found as results of the ancient practice as well.
While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, YMCA Executive Director Liz Cassiday said the Y has been lucky enough to have serious, trained practitioners of yoga as their instructors.
The Y offers multiple skill levels of yoga, multiple times of the day to ensure every resident in Sheridan can practice at a comfortable skill when it is most convenient for them.
