Asbestos Abatement of Historic Locomotive Discussed by Council
Last year the Sheridan City Council began discussions on what to do with the historic locomotive that sits at the corner of 5th and Broadway Streets in Sheridan. At a study session of the Council Monday night, City Engineer Hanns Mercer presented the Council with a recommendation of Wasatch Railroad Contractors to perform asbestos abatement on the historic engine.
Mercer explained why Wasatch Railroad Contractors was being recommended as the company to perform the asbestos abatement despite not being the lowest bidder for the project.
The bid from Wasatch for asbestos abatement of the historic locomotive is $179,000. The Council will not consider the bid recommendation until it can be determined what kind of a health risk the asbestos in the locomotive is posing to the community. As Mercer said, he expects to have that information available to present to the Council at a study session in March. The City acquired the historic locomotive in 1962.
