Big Horn Native Diana Volk was recently honored by Adams MultiMedia Wyoming as a Women of Influence Lifetime Achievement award.

According to Adams MultiMedia Wyoming, this is one of their most anticipated annual events which celebrated the exceptional women who make a difference across Wyoming. These women strengthen our businesses, organizations, and communities every day.

Volk said the event was held on October 6, at the Little America Hotel in Cheyenne in the Grand Ballroom. First Lady Jennie Gordon was the Master of Ceremonies.

“It was a very large event,” Volk added.

A long-time photographer, Volke also is a part of the Horse Nation Indian Relay Council, and she explained why she was nominated for the award

She added that the Horse Nation Indian Relay started in Billings, and then moved Walla Walla Washington, then to Casper and then to Fort Pierre, SD. For the 10th anniversary, they moved to Cheyenne.

She said they had a newspaper with a brief narrative about each winner. She read what they printed about her nomination.

She added how she became a part of the Indian Relay,

Volk came by her photography career naturally. Her grandfather on her mother’s side, Archie Nash, was a well-known writer and photographer who wrote for Western Horseman, National Geographic and Outdoor Life, as well as other publications. He also took many photos of the Miss Indian America contestants. Volk has almost come full circle,

“I sure got a good boost from him,” she said.

Her family has lived in Big Horn for many years. Volk still lives on her grandfather’s property near Big Horn. Volk was born to Zane and Elaine Hilman of Big Horn, and her great-grandfather Hilman was the first baby boy born in Big Horn, and her family were some of the first settlers in the area.

“I was flabbergasted. I still can’t believe I won it, it is pretty exciting,” she said.
