UW Extension publication details ways to reduce livestock loss due to poisonous plants

Poisonous plants are a complex issue that can causes losses to livestock and ranch income, according to a range management specialist with the University of Wyoming Extension Service.

An Extension publication is now available online that can help ranchers deal with poisonous plants and affected livestock. The publication is called “Plants poisonous to livestock in Montana and Wyoming: Considerations for reducing production losses.”

Range Management Specialist Derek Scasta said it’s a comprehensive reference to keep on hand.

The publication describes signs of poisoning and livestock affected, toxic doses and factors influencing toxicity. The publication also provides information on the habitats where these plants grow in Wyoming and Montana.
