cvannoyThe Sheridan County School District #2 Greenhouse got a boost on Wednesday, December 18, when T-Mobil presented Scott Stults, Superintendent, with a $50,000 Hometown Grant, at a ceremony at the greenhouse. T-Mobil awards 100 towns a year with project funding, to help build, rebuild or refresh community spaces that foster local connections.
Ivan Ocana manager of the Sheridan T-Mobil store, presented the check to Stults.
Stults talked about how the grant will help to add more produce to the greenhouse.
In his welcome speech, Scott thanked many who have helped with the project and acknowledged Sheridan Mayor Rich Bridger, who attended the program. He added that a tremendous amount of work went into the greenhouses. He also thanked Papa Joe’s Produce, the food group and Rooted in Wyoming, and the other growers in the community. He said that the horticulture class is learning new ways of growing plants. “Our kids have been an active part of the project.”
Three high school students attended the event as well and talked about the horticulture class and how the greenhouse is benefiting them.
Shayley Cooper, Greenhouse manager talked about what they are doing at the greenhouse.
Sheridan Mayor Rich Bridger attended the event and had this to say about the greenhouse project and T-Mobil’s donation.
He added that “You can’t underestimate or overestimate the effect that those partners have when helping with these sorts of projects. I’m very happy that T-Mobil is willing to step in and help the district and the community. It shows excellent community support.”
Currently, the greenhouse has hydroponically grown leafy green vegetables, but they are planning to expand into other vegetables that will be grown in raised beds. Cooper said they use natural pest control, using beneficial insects, such as lady bugs.
In addition to lettuce, she also grows spinach, Swiss chard and basil, as well as some flowers to help the beneficial insects. At the reception she served salad from the greenhouse, with basil walnut pesto dressing, and an appetizer made with the spinach.
