Report of counterfeit bills making the rounds in Sheridan

According to Wells Fargo Bank Branch Manager Christine Temple, counterfeit $10 and $20-dollar bills have been identified by the branch. Temple wished to inform Sheridan Media of the discovery of these bills in the best interest of the community and businesses. 

According to the U.S. Secret Service citizens should report suspected counterfeit currency to local authorities, the Sheridan Police Department or the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office. These law enforcement agencies, banks and cash processors will submit suspected counterfeit currency to the Secret Service via authorized channels. 

The agency reports that the simplest way to identify genuine Federal Reserve Notes (US currency), except the $1 and $2 bills, is by finding the embedded thread. Higher value bills have a clear thread embedded vertically in the paper. This thread is inscribed with the denomination of the note and is visible only when held to a light. Each denomination has a unique thread position and glows a different color when held to ultraviolet (UV) light.

The Secret Service reports they sized more than $22 million in counterfeit U.S. Currency last year.
