One former Sheridan High School Football player has a chance to help his new team win a national championship, while another will be cheering them on.

Freshman Running Back Garrett Coon plays for the Montana State Bobcats and the team is in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision National Championship Game this coming Saturday (January 8th).

Kickoff against North Dakota State is scheduled for 10am Mountain Time in Frisco, Texas, which is a northern suburb of Dallas.

The game will be televised on ESPN2.

Junior Wide Receiver and Punt Returner Coy Steel also plays for MSU, but was injured in a game in late-September and hasn’t played since.

Coon graduated from Sheridan High School in 2020, helped the Broncs win the football state championship in 2019 and won the Wyoming Gatorade Football Player of the Year that same year.

Steel is a 2017 Sheridan High School graduate, helped the Broncs win the football state championship in 2015 and 2016 and is the 2016 Wyoming Gatorade Football Player of the Year.

The Bobcats are 12-2 on the season, losing to the University of Wyoming and arch-rival Montana.

MSU was seeded 8th when the bracket was unveiled.

In the quarter-finals the team went on the road and beat top-seed and defending champ Sam Houston State.

The Bison are 13-1 and their only loss was in early November against South Dakota State, a team that Montana State beat in the semi-finals.

The 2020 FCS season was played in spring 2021 because of COVID concerns, but MSU elected to not participate.

NDSU won the national championship in both 2018 and 2019, and beat the Bobcats in the 2019 semi-finals.
