A Sheridan native has made Wyoming history in competitive weightlifting.

Earlier this month, Mitch Godwin, a 2013 Sheridan HS graduate, competed and won the 2024 US Strongman Nationals Competition in Denver, Colorado.

He was in the sub-308 pound weight class, which is a sub-class of super heavyweights.

Godwin placed first in the Yoke Walk, tied for 2nd in the Powerbar Deadlift, was 5th in the sandbag to shoulder carry load and was 2nd in the stone over bar competition.

He says he’s been participating in competitive weightlifting for about 4-5 years, and at first he was working out to lose weight, got bored and then he got some inspiration.

Godwin adds unlike most other sports, experience in strongman doesn’t always give a competitor an advantage.

“That’s one of the beautiful things about strongman, is strong is strong. Can you lift it or can you not? There’s no worries about experience, there’s no worries about body types. You fit into a weight class and can you lift it or not. A lot of people just see us and they see us as unfit bigger guys, but really how the sport is going, we need to be leaner, we need to be in better shape. I always joke around that we’re the most conditioned fat guys, you’ll ever meet.”

Godwin currently works as an operations coordinator at the Sheridan Wastewater Treatment Plant.

He says before this year, there had never been a strongman national champion from Wyoming.

Two other Wyomingites also won their respective weight classes at this year’s competition.

Those two are CJ Allen from Douglas and Landon Whitt from Cheyenne.
