Both the Big Horn and Tongue River football teams will start 2A East Conference play later today.
BH is coming off of a double-overtime loss at Lovell last week, and the problem was their defense, giving up more than 400 yards.
Coach Kirk McLaughlin says normally a close loss like that is tough to get over, but it was a non-conference game and that makes it a little easier.
Now the Rams are focused on an Upton-Sundance team that opened a few eyes last week, when they beat Cokeville.
Coach says the Patriots look different than they have in years past.
“Offensively they do look like they’re doing some different things this year. Defensively they’re doing the same defense they’ve ran for years. I think they’re kind of offensively kind of focusing more around the talent that they’ve got and that’s why I think the scheme has changed. They’re putting a lot of emphasis on the quarterback. It’s a new opponent. You’ve always got to have some sort of wrinkle for them and things change a little bit when you see a little bit different skill then the different type of personnel that we saw at Lovell vs. what we’re going to see this week, so game plan changes a little bit, but the playbook hasn’t changed much.”
Meanwhile, Tongue River will hit the road to take on Glenrock.
Last week, the Eagles defense held Thermopolis to less than 5 yards of total offense in the first half and about 80 yards for the game.
Coach Steve Hanson says TR held on to the ball for a long time, thus the defense didn’t have to do much work.
Offensively the team worked on more of their bread and butter plays, but now that it is conference time, it’s time to open up the playbook some.
“We’re going to show Glenrock some things that nobody’s seen, that we’ve had in our hip pocket since 2-a-days back in August and some of it even before then. I wouldn’t say we’re going to go all out and show everything, but we’re definitely going to show a lot of glimpses of some very new wrinkles that teams are going to have to prepare for.”
Both the Rams and Eagles are scheduled to kickoff their games at 6pm.
