FIREFIGHTERS CANCER SUPPORT GROUP

It’s one of the most dangerous occupations in the country. Firefighters risk their lives to save people from burning buildings and other dangerous situations. They’re susceptible to burns, smoke inhalation and crush injuries from collapsing structures. But according to the National Fire Protection Association, fewer than half of the injuries firefighters suffer each year happen on the “fireground”, or the area where firefighting takes place.
Many of the injuries are sprains or strains, but firefighters are also exposed to hazardous materials such as asbestos or chemicals with long term job-related illnesses such as asthma, heart disease, lung damage and cancer. The harsh reality is that almost two-thirds of the firefighters battling fires today will be battling cancer tomorrow.

And not only do firefighters face a higher rate of cancer than any other occupation, they face a higher mortality rate from it as well.

The National Fire Protection Association helps firefighters, EMS professionals, and their families cope with cancer. It’s their goal to provide occupational-cancer awareness, prevention training, and support for those dealing with cancer nationwide.
