In a release, The Sheridan High School We the People team has launched their fundraising effort to help earn the resources necessary to compete in the national competition in Washington, D.C. in late April.

In January 2022, the Sheridan High School We The People team won its ninth overall state championship with a team, like those who have come before, consisting of completely new team members.

Funding the students’ expenses is a team effort; students or their family will pay approximately one third of the cost, the district has also contributed and many individuals and businesses have already generously stepped up to help the team meet the $70,000 goal.

“We the People has taught me how to think critically about everything I hear and use facts and analysis to back my worldview and to keep myself educated and up to date,” team member Annie Hoffman said. “I also value the conversations I get to have with my peers about any and every topic, as we share different court cases, amendments, and information among our units.”

According to the release, this year’s team consists of 29 students. Officials have also decided to open the opportunity to seniors from last year’s team who did not get the opportunity to travel due to COVID-19.

“We believe the more students who have this opportunity, the better off our nation will be. This program is shaping future leaders,” Michael Thomas said.

“Being a part of We The People has taught me how to actively listen in discussions, delineate work in a group, and to always over prepare when debating a topic,” Hailey Herzog said.

Friends of We the People can make a tax-deductible donation through the Sheridan High School Booster Club– We The People competition.

“I am so proud of these kids,” SHS teacher mentor Kim Ferguson said. “They have worked really hard all year and you can see it in the results.”

Team members will also be delivering letters to local businesses in town and requesting sponsorships. All sponsors will be featured on a We the People t-shirt that students will wear while in Washington, D.C.
