Early morning frosts create more fuel for Lone Star Fire

Published

The Lone Star Fire is currently at 3,346 acres as 53 total fire personnel battle the blaze. Still active, the Lone Star fire continues to burn despite two days of colder, wetter weather. Warmer and drier weather is forecasted for the Yellowstone area in the coming weeks. Hard frosts at night have killed light vegetation, such as grasses, and as these fuels dry out, fire activity is expected to increase.

The forecasted weather for the area predicts dry but cooler days with very little chance for precipitation.

The Grand Loop Road between Old Faithful and West Thumb is open but may be closed at any time due to smoke and low visibility. Officials are asking visitors to be cautious if smoke is present.

Firefighters continue to cut trees and heavy vegetation around the Old Faithful area to protect power lines, historic buildings, and communication equipment. These efforts will help protect the Old Faithful area if this, or any other wildfires, threaten it in the future.

Officials say that firefighter and public safety are the top priorities for all efforts.

Fire activity in the western United States has created high demand for firefighting resources. The nation is currently in Preparedness Level 5. This represents the highest level of fire activity and demand for resources.

All residents and visitors can assist fire efforts by following fire restrictions to reduce the potential of additional starts. Fire danger in the Yellowstone area remains very high; campfires in the backcountry.
