Sheridan Advocacy and Resource Center Executive Director Yvonne Shirey and Assistant Director Rhonda Weber appeared on Sheridan Media’s Pulse to discuss Domestic Violence Awareness Month and ways residents can support survivors throughout the year.

Observed each October, the month recognizes survivors, honors victims and highlights available resources. Shirey said the month is a time to remember that domestic violence affects the whole family, not just the intimate partner relationships.

Earlier this month the center held its “Make the Night Bright” awareness walk in Sheridan, bringing community members together to demonstrate support for people affected by domestic violence.

Primarily funded through federal and state grants, the center often utilizes money from the community to be used in domestic violence emergencies. As the grants are restricted, meaning the funds can only be used to pay administration and maintenance, funds from the community are vital to keep some Sheridan families safe when they need it most.
