Sheridan Troopers Legion Baseball/WY AA State Tournament: The Sheridan Troopers Legion Baseball team took a big step forward last night, in their quest to win their first state championship since 1997.
Griffen Switzenberg pitched a complete game, giving up 2 runs and 5 hits, plus he struck out 5, while Blaine Phillps went 2 for 3 at the plate, with 3 RBI’s, including a 2-run go-ahead double in the 5th inning, as Sheridan shocked Cheyenne in Cheyenne, 4-2 to clinch a spot in tomorrow’s Wyoming Legion Baseball AA State Tournament Championship Game.
Head Coach Austin Cowen said it was going to take a complete team effort to beat the 5-time defending state champs, and for the most part, the Troopers did just that.
Although Sheridan is assured a spot in tomorrow’s championship game, the team still has to play today to help determine which team will be their opponent.
The Troopers will take on Casper at 6:30pm, and it’s not necessarily a game that the team has to win, although it is an elimination game for the Oilers.
Coach Cowen says it’s a weird predicament, but the plan is for Sheridan to show up to today’s game and conduct business as usual.
Before that 6:30pm game, Cheyenne Post 6 will take on the Gillette Roughriders at 3:30pm, in what is an elimination game for both teams.
As for tomorrow’s championship day schedule, if Sheridan beats Casper today, then they will take on the Cheyenne/Gillette winner for the championship at 11am.
If they lose that game, there will be a rematch at 2pm, because it’s a double-elimination tournament.
If the Troopers lose vs. the Oilers today, then Casper will play the Cheyenne/Gillette winner tomorrow at 11am, and Sheridan would play the winner of that game, in a 1-game winner take all championship at 2pm.
Colorado Rockies Baseball: The Colorado Rockies ended up losing 2 out of 3 games at Cleveland, by dropping yesterday’s game 5-zip.
Today is an off day on the schedule and then the Rocks start a 6-game homestand tomorrow, with 3 games vs. Pittsburgh, followed by 3 games against Toronto.
Today is also the Major League Baseball trade deadline, and yesterday Colorado traded away relief pitcher Tyler Kinley to Atlanta, in exchange for minor leaguer Austin Smith.
NFL Pre-Season Football/Denver Broncos: The Hall of Fame Game is today as Detroit and the LA Chargers will tangle in Canton, Ohio starting at 6pm.
The Denver Broncos kick-off their pre-season one week from this coming Saturday, August 9th at San Francisco.
The regular season for the Broncos starts on Sunday, September 7th at home vs. Tennessee.
It was recently announced that the University of Wyoming marching band will perform during halftime of that game.
