Celebrate the Arts in Sheridan will conclude this year at the Whitney Center for the Arts at Sheridan College when Carrie Rodriguez, a singer-songwriter from Austin, Texas, finds beauty in the cross-pollination of diverse traditions.
The Arts at Sheridan College presents Carrie Rodriguez and Luke Jacobs in concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, in Kinnison Hall at the Whitney Center for the Arts at Sheridan College
According to a release, a passionate performer, Rodriguez melds fiery fiddle playing, electrifying vocals and a fresh interpretation of new and classic songs with an “Ameri-Chicana” attitude.
Rodriguez has performed on stages across North America and Europe for the last decade, as well as on programs such as Austin City Limits, The Tonight Show, A Prairie Home Companion, and NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts. Her last release, the critically-acclaimed bilingual album, Lola, was named as one of NPR’s top 50 albums of the year.
Rodriguez has written the music for Americano which played Off Broadway March – June of this year in addition to launching her Laboratorio Residency in Austin. Laboratorio is a musical exploration, as well as a celebration of Latinx culture and its contribution to the American experiment. For each live performance, Rodriguez and her all-star Laboratorio band collaborate with a diverse array of guest artists, ensuring that every show is completely unique.
Conceived over the pandemic, Rodriguez and her partner, Luke Jacobs launched a video series entitled, From Texas With Love – a musical conversation in the wilds of Texas with some of the state’s most celebrated artists featuring collaborations in Season 1 with Ruthie Foster, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Emily Gimble, David Pulkingham & David Ramirez. In Season 2, premiering in August, ’22, conversations and performances will be presented with John Doe, Melissa Carper, Matt The Electrician & Bruce Robison.
In the words of author Brené Brown, “She’s the trifecta for me – beautiful singer, soulful songwriter, and kick-ass fiddler.”
