Three Sheridan County HS Athletes Named Finalists For 2024 Milward Simpson Award: The best of the best Wyoming High School Athletes from the graduating class of 2024 have been named, and 3 Sheridan County High School Athletes are on that list.

Dane Steel and Addie Pendergast of Sheridan as well as Gavin Stafford of Big Horn have been named finalists for the 2024 Milward Simpson Award, which is given to the top overall male and female athlete, in each graduating class.

Five boys and five girls are nominated.

Steel participated in football, wrestling and boys soccer for Sheridan, while helping the Broncs win the last 3 football state championships.

He was named the 4A defensive player of the year twice, the offensive player of the year once, and was named the 2023 Wyoming Gatorade Player of the Year.

As a wrestler, he is a 3-time Wyoming High School State Champion, and 3-time All-American, plus he was this year’s National Runner-Up in his grade level and weight class.

Pendergast won the 2A Girls Cross Country State Title as a freshman at Tongue River, and helped the Lady Eagles win the State Title in 2020, as well as the 2021 2A Girls State Title in Outdoor Track and Field.

She helped Sheridan win the 2023 Indoor Track and Field State Championship.

This year she was a part of the 4A State Championship teams in both girls basketball and outdoor track and field, plus she holds the overall state record in the 400 meter dash and the 300 meter hurdles.

Stafford helped Big Horn win the 2A Football State Championship in 2022, and was part of the Rams’ back-to-back State Championships in Outdoor Track and Field last year and this year.

He holds the overall state record in the 100 meter dash.

The 2024 Milward Simpson Award winners will be announced on June 15th at Cody.

Sheridan Troopers Legion Baseball: The Sheridan Troopers start conference play today against 4-time defending state champion Cheyenne Post 6, who have also won the Wyoming AA State Championship in 20 of the past 23 seasons.

Last year, the Sixers won the AA Northwest Regional Tournament and became the first Wyoming team ever to qualify for the Legion World Series and made it all the way to the national semi-finals.

Troopers coach Austin Cowen says while that is a very impressive resume, he and his team are not buying into the hype.

Sheridan and Cheyenne split head-to-head games last year at both places.

Cheyenne Manager Ty Lain says while it’s been fun getting every opponent’s best shot, today’s double-header against the Troopers could be the toughest opponent that the Sixers have faced so far this season.

First pitch of today’s game is at 3:30pm.

You can watch a LIVE video stream at sheridanmedia.com, and hear the audio play-by-play from James Timberlake on AM 1410 KWYO and 106.9 FM.

It’s also little league day at the games.

All kids who show up in their jerseys get a free hot dog and get to come onto the field to be recognized in between games.

Colorado Rockies Baseball: The Colorado Rockies, lost the first game of a 3-game series at home vs. Cincinnati last night 13-3.

Brendan Rogers hit a solo run to help keep the score close early on, but it was all Cincinnati from the 4th inning onward.

Game 2 of the 3-game series is today starting at 6:40pm.
