A Sheridan High School Senior won’t be dancing the Charleston, but she will be throwing in Charleston.
Josaphine Ankney has signed her letter of intent (LOI) to compete on the track and field team at Charleston Southern University.
Earlier this year, she placed 3rd in the shot put at the state indoor track and field meet, and last year she was 3rd in the same event at the state outdoor meet.
About 2 weeks ago she won both the shot put and discus throwing events at the first outdoor meet of this season in Broomfield, Colorado.
Ankney says she was contacted by a number of colleges, all of which said they were impressed with what she’s accomplished, in the little time she’s been throwing.
“This would only be my 3rd year in throwing. I didn’t even know what throwing was in my freshman year and so coming in and having my coaches teach me and everything, I’m very new to it, so they can change me and I haven’t gotten that many bad habits from somebody let’s say has been doing it 8 years.”
Ankney adds she plans to major in business finance and become a financial advisor.
The Charleston Southern Buccaneers are located in North Charleston, South Carolina and compete in the Big South Conference.
