Virgil Lowell Powell, 88, passed away from Alzheimer disease, Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at Big Horn Rehabilitation and Care Center in Sheridan, Wyoming.

Virgil was born on March 5, 1938, to C. Wayne and Zelpha G. Powell in Gregory, South Dakota. Virgil has one brother, Adrian W. Powell of Maple Valley, WA. Dad grew up in Gregory, SD where he graduated from High School. He played and lettered in football and summer baseball. Dad graduated from Black Hills State University in Spearfish, SD in 1963.

In the summers of 1962 and 1963, Dad worked for Montgomery Ward Company in Deadwood, SD. Upon graduation from BHSU, he decided to stay with Montgomery Ward Company.  In 1971, Dad was offered an Assistant Manager position with MW store in Grand Junction, Colorado.

In 1975, Dad was offered a Manager position with MW store in Sheridan, Wyoming. He stayed with the Montgomery Ward Company until 1983 when a corporate decision was made to close all stores.

In 1987, Dad and Mom visited Bullhead City, Arizona and decided to move closer to their first grandchild! They loved the hot desert weather! Dad worked for the State of Arizona as an assessor for Mohave County until retirement.

Virgil met his wife, Marie V. Hoppe (Phillipsburg, KS) through school friends. They were married in Omaha, Nebraska on June 2, 1960. To this union, they were blessed with daughters Meshelle (1961) and Pamela (1963).

Dad enjoyed pheasant and deer hunting, fishing, golfing, gardening, traveling and especially taking Sunday afternoon drives! He was quite the cook on his grill! Dad loved his grandchildren, showing them how to catch a fish in the Colorado River in Bullhead City! He went with Adrian on a fishing trip to Ketchikan, Alaska in 2018. He also found ranch life exciting, watching the wildlife, and Wyoming sunsets!

Marie passed away in 2016, and Dad continued to live at home in Bullhead City. In February 2021, Dad moved to Wyoming to be with Meshelle and Arlin.

Virgil is predeceased by his parents; his wife; and daughter Pamela (John) Ware, Broadus, MT. Virgil is survived by his brother Adrian (Joan) Powell of Maple Valley, WA; daughter Meshelle (Arlin) Cooper of Arvada, WY; his grandchildren Megan (Michael) Delk of Custer, SD (great granddaughters, Raelynn, Arya and Winter), Delilah Brunke (Jennifer Morris) of Rapid City, SD, and niece Valerie Soushek and nephew David (Mary) Powell of Maple Valley, WA; along with many other family members and Special friend of our family, Linda (who visited Dad at BH Rehab).

Dad was a friend to many, always ready to help in any manner. He was a Great father and will be sadly missed. Per Dad’s request, there will not be a funeral service. He asked that his and Mom’s ashes be put together. “Dad, you are finally free of Alzheimer’s and united in Heaven with Mom and Pam”. Rest in peace.
