Sheridan County Issues Release on Fire Concerns

Published

on

Sheridan County’s Commissioners issued a release Thursday urging extreme caution with any outdoor burning, due to unseasonably dry conditions

in the county.

In the release, the commission said it’s the warmest winter on record in Sheridan County, and the grass is unseasonably dry, and rural firefighters have responded to vegetation fires for three consecutive days.

The Sheridan County Board of County Commissioners, County Fire Warden, and rural fire department chiefs urge everyone to use extreme caution with any outdoor burning.

They did say those planning to burn should: (a) notify the Dispatch Center at (307) 672-2413 prior to ignition so your fire department does not respond to an unknown fire; (b) check the weather forecast. If increased winds or dry conditions are predicted, avoid burning before and during that time; (c) have fire tools, water, and a phone readily available; (d) do not delay calling for help if your burn gets out of hand. Early response can minimize control efforts and potential damage; (e) do not leave fires unattended.

To reduce the risk of starting an unplanned wildfire, keep at least a 15-foot area clear of flammable materials when burning slash piles or using a burn barrel. Typically, snow cover provides a natural buffer this time of year—but that has not been the case this season.
