SCSD#2 Board Discusses Back-to-School

August has been a busy month for SCSD#2, according to Superintendent Scott Stults at the regular board of trustees meeting held on August 5. He said there were several activities already starting before school begins for the 2024-25 year. The first day of school for students will be on August 27.

In his superintendent’s report Stults also mentioned summer school, which will run for two weeks, and KinderBoost, a two-week school-readiness program, where upcoming Kindergartners and families have the opportunity to become familiar with their new school environment.

He talked about the county fair and commented on how the 4-H and FFA members worked on their projects at the fair, as well as the hard work put in by the Ag Teachers and FFA advisors at the school.

The board approved the hire of Scott Martinsen as the new Technology Director, as Ryan Schasteen, who has been with the district for 19 years, is taking another position in Arkansas. The board thanked him for his help over the years and wished him well in his new venture.

The board also heard a presentation from Troy Decker, director of facilities, on the updated gym floor, new lighting an updated HVAC system, and other maintenance projects at the schools. Trustee Ed Fessler commented on the updated gym floor, “It looks wonderful.”

Decker also mentioned that the greenhouses are up and running, and that lettuce is being grown there for the school lunches.

The board also noted that the application for the Cloud Peak Academy charter school was filled out correctly, but they have yet to discuss and hold a public meeting on the merits of the application.

Carol Kane, a founding board member of Cloud Peak Academy spoke to the board.

Amy Rojo thanked the board for raising the pay for substitute teachers, and talked about some of her experiences as a substitute.

The board also discussed the Book Study: Leading PLCs at Work Districtwide, Chapter 3, and some of the information that the board obtained from reading the book.

Superintendent Stults also talked about back-to-school at SCSD#2.

The next board meeting will on September 9 at the Central Office at 6 p.m.
