SCCD Oil Recycling Program

Published

on

The Sheridan County Conservation District is reminding residents that free used motor oil recycling is available for individual households with collection tanks in Dayton and Clearmont.

According to district manager Carrie Rogaczewski, the district established the program in the 1990s to address concerns about rural oil disposal practices. In more than 30 years of operation,  she said the service has collected and recycled more than 40,000 gallons of used oil through professional waste management companies.

Rogaczewski noted that Dayton and Clearmont do provide small appropriations to help offset expenses, but the district pays to maintain the service. She said over the past year, the district has spent more than $3,700 on the program.

The district reminds the public that these collection tanks are intended for household use, not commercial businesses.

Residents should deposit only used motor oil. Other materials, including solvents, antifreeze and carburetor fluid, make disposal more difficult and much more costly.

Keeping those materials out of the tanks helps the district continue providing this service to Sheridan County’s rural households.
