Community Information Sessions on Proposed Senior Citizen Service District
There will be a series of upcoming information sessions on the proposed Senior Citizen Service District. Sheridan Media’s Ron Richter has the details.
Sheridan County residents are invited to attend a series of five 90-minute community information sessions regarding the proposed Senior Citizen Service District that will appear on the August 18 primary-election ballot. There will be three sessions on Wednesday, August 5 in Sheridan and one session in Dayton.
In Sheridan they are scheduled for 7:00 am to 8:30 am, noon to 1:30 pm, and 5:15 to 7:15 pm. All of the sessions in Sheridan will be held at the Center for a Vital Community, 246 Broadway Street. The session in Dayton will be 9:30 am to 11:00 am at the Tongue River Valley Community Center, 1100 Main Street. There will be one session in Big Horn on Thursday, August 6 from 6 to 8 pm at the Big Horn Women’s Club, 314 South 2nd Street.
The sessions will provide an opportunity for residents to learn about the proposal, how the district would operate if approved by voters, and how district funds could be used. Questions will be welcomed during the presentations and discussion. The proposed district was placed before the voters following action by the Sheridan County Board of Commissioners in December, 2025. The ballot proposition asks whether a Sheridan County Senior Citizen Service District should be established with a maximum property tax levy not to exceed two mills. The community sessions will be hosted by Dustin Stephens, Executive Director of the Hub on Smith, and Bryn Stewart, Board President of the Hub on Smith.

Worthy causes will get our voluntary support. But the funding method being proposed, is to raise taxes on all property owners, by force. Paying taxes is never voluntary, it is always backed by force. Putting a gun to your neighbors head and demanding they pay higher taxes to “support” seniors, is the communist way, Not the American Way.
It makes no sense to raise taxes on seniors, send that money to gov’t politicians and boards. so they can redistribute our money to other paid boards; to “help” seniors. It’s dumber than dirt!
Just leave the money in our pockets and we’ll decide how to help ourselves.
Gov’t can never spend our money more wisely than we can ourselves. Never vote for higher taxes.
Lower taxes are always better.

The largest group of property owners are seniors. Does it help seniors to increase their property taxes?
Will the government boards and politicians spend our money more wisely than we can?
Who thought now is a good time to Raise Taxes?
Why not just leave the money in our pockets in the first place and let US decide what we need?
Will the person running the propaganda sessions benefit from a new added tax hike?

And to be clear, the “district” is ALL of Sheridan county and the new, added, tax increase will raise taxes on ALL commercial and residential property in ALL of Sheridan County.
Now is a terrible time to ADD another Tax Burden on top of the existing 8 other districts.
People are struggling with paying property taxes as it is. And someone wants to ADD to our misery.
When will the Sheridan Socialist take their hands out of our pockets?
