Summer Reading Program Goes Prehistoric

The Sheridan County Library System is seeing record participation in its Summer Reading Program as readers of all ages are invited to take part in this year’s dinosaur-themed adventure. 

Sheridan County Library System Director Amy Long and Youth Services Manager Zola Shockley appeared on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse and said the program began in mid-June but everyone is invited to join the program at any time. 

The Summer Reading program includes reading challenges, special events, crafts and activities at library branches throughout Sheridan County. Although there’s been an adult component for some time, Shockley said Community Engagement Manager Cassie Stone has put a large effort into improving the teen and adult programs, making the Summer Reading Program an activity for the whole family.

Long said the program is designed to keep children engaged with reading during the summer while encouraging lifelong learning for teens and adults as well. New to the program is the addition of a visual component in the form of small dinosaurs being added to jars each time a book is completed.

Participation has grown significantly in recent years, with approximately 550 children taking part in 2024 and about 850 in 2025. Learn more by clicking here.
