JCSD1 Board OKs Further Look Into Graduation Requirements

The Board of Trustees for the Johnson County School District, during their meeting for October, Voted to approve Superintendent Charles Auzqui to continue researching the possibility of changing the district’s graduation requirements.

According to discussions, the district has been looking into possible changes for quite some time, stemming from a projected decline in student enrollment, the need to address funding challenges from the decline, and the possible need to go to a seven-period day, down from the current eight-period day and the need to reduce graduation credits district-wide from 28 to 24.

During the Public Comment period in the meeting, Kami Kennedy spoke against changing the district’s graduation requirements.

Kennedy said the group believes a community work session would be helpful in the board and the district making decisions in the matter and determining how they move forward.

She finished by saying that looking at this more in-depth and answering the many questions concerning how it will affect students will, “help creat those life-long learners and students that are cultivating excellence not only in our community but in our nation.”

The district has scheduled two community discussions concerning the proposed changes to graduation requirements on Wednesday, October 30 at the Buffalo High School Auditorium beginning at 6:00 p.m.; and on Tuesday, November 5 at the Kaycee K-12 Multi-Purpose Room beginning at 5:30 p.m.
