Resident Questions Rezone of Fairgrounds Property

During the last Sheridan County Commission meeting, in the Public Comment portion of their agenda, county resident Mike Arzy came to the podium to ask about the recent decision by the Sheridan City Council to re-zone the county-owned fairgrounds property on West 5th Street.

Chairman Nick Siddle asked County Deputy Attorney Clint Beaver to explain the reason.

The city council approved the rezone of the fairgrounds property from

an R-1 Residential District to a B-1 Business District at their last meeting, to allow for a commercial sized electronic messaging center sign.

    I don’t get why people are so worried about the zoning of the fairgrounds. The only one I’ve heard that is even plausible is the county selling it and they’re worried about who would buy it. B-1 wouldn’t let an industry go in there. Remember it’s right down the road from the hospital it’s not like it’s tucked deep into a residential area. The fairgrounds are in disrepair anyways, I don’t think anything coming in would be anymore of a blight than the place already is.

    Thru planning commission meeting and city meeting almost all these speaking were against the change. Yet our council still voted it in. They do not listen to the people, who did not want it. It was too much work to change just a space for the sign. I believe it was mr. Linden who said next time maybe that’s something we should look at. Ezra,you are wrong on most points.
