Lewis Welty

Lewis Welty (Lew), 94, of Sheridan, WY passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2023.

Lew was born on August 4, 1929, in Freedom, Oklahoma to Nova B. Welty and Sinah M. (Feely) Welty. He was the last of 9 children, known and loved by many as Numpy. He earned his resilience living through the Dust Bowl, and the Great Depression in Oklahoma. He later moved to Pueblo, CO, and graduated from Pleasant View High School in 1949.

Lew married the love of his life, Miriam E. Fox, on September 3, 1950. They had three children, Rollie, Rex, and Mary.

Lew was a sergeant in the U.S. Marines from December 1950 – May 1952. He was called to duty on his wedding day. He served at Camp Pendleton, California where he received honors in riflery. Lew was a custom farmer in Boone, CO, from 1957 to 1967 and was awarded “Farmer of the Year”.

Lew was an active Avondale/Vineland Lions Club member from 1964-1969.

In 1970, Lew and his family moved to Great Falls, MT where he was an auto mechanic. He then moved to Sheridan, WY with his family in 1974 where he worked at a local auto dealership as a Shop Foreman. Five years later, he started his own business, Welty’s Service and Auto Repair until his retirement in 1994. He continued to hay and refurbish old tractors for many more years.

Lew enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing, repainting and rebuilding old tractors, riding his mules, and tinkering outdoors. He attended the Ignite Wesleyan Church, in Sheridan, WY.

Lew is survived by his wife, Miriam, of 73 years, their son Rollie (Bev) Sheridan WY, son Rex (Laura) Banner WY, and daughter Mary (Randy) Boulder CO. He has 6 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Lew will be put to rest at Haskew Cemetery, Woodward, Oklahoma with military honors. A Celebration of Life and get-together will be determined and published later.
