Archie Grooms

Archie L. Grooms passed away on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at Westview Health Care Center at the age of 95. Cremation has taken place and per his wishes, later to be announced, there will be a celebration of life gathering next summer, followed by his ashes along with his wife’s to be scattered in the Big Horn Mountains.

Archie was a Sheridan native born to Lafe and Amelia Grooms and was the fifth of 10 children. He attended Sheridan schools and was a guard on the 1946 S.H.S. State champion football team.

Archie met and married the love of his life Arlene Wood and were married in Reno, Nevada on December 4, 1948. They were married 53 years until her passing in 2001. He and Arlene raised 3 daughters, Janet Evans (Mike), Peggy Miller (Rob), and Tammy Ketcham (Steve), all of Sheridan.

Archie became a bricklayer/stonemason in 1951 and worked for over 50 years until his retirement, working for companies such as Turner Masonry, Husman Brothers, and Thompson-Master Masons. His work ethic, skill, and dedication were second to none.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, gardening, snowmobiling, and especially anything that involved fun family gatherings in which he was game to try it all. He believed almost anything could be fixed with duct tape, silicone caulk, a hammer, and maybe a screwdriver, and no carburetor was safe in his presence. There’s a favorite family saying, “There’s the right way, the wrong way, and there’s Archie’s way” and he lived that life to the very end.

Archie is preceded in death by his parents, all nine siblings, his wife Arlene, and 1 grandson. He is survived by his daughters, 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren with numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Sheridan Dog & Cat Shelter, 84 East Ridge Road, Sheridan, WY 82801; Sheridan Bronc Booster Club, 1605 Long Dr., Sheridan, WY 82801; the Sheridan Food Bank, 1141 Crook St., Sheridan, WY 82801 or a memorial of your choosing.

Online condolences may be written at www.kanefuneral.com. Kane Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

We will miss you, Papa Archie. You and Grammy Lene were a major part of our lives – camping and fishing in the Big Horn mountains every summer. What fun riding in the back of your old green pick-up with all the dogs, camping gear, and cousins. The memories are priceless. May you rest in peace. Love, Glory, Denny, and Amy.

It was a priviledge to know this fine man and his family. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. I know it is not easy to lose a family member.

I remember how excited my brother and I were when Archie (we always thought of him as a uncle) asked us to go with him to Powell lake. We didn’t know at the time, we were the designated packers of his inflatable rubber boat. We made several trips too the mountains with Archie. What a great guy!
