On Wednesday, December 11 the SCSD#3 Board of Trustees held their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. at the school. In the absence of Chairman Karis Prusak, Superintendent Chase Christensen was appointed Chairman Pro-Tem and ran the meeting.

The board heard a presentation about RCA Houses, which is a way for schools to create a positive school climate.

Cameron Spade, SCSD#3 physical education teacher, told the board where he learned of the RCA House System. He said he attended a training this past summer in Green River, where they have a system similar to the RCA Houses. He did some brainstorming with Jonathan Broersma, 5th grade teacher and assistant director of technology, to come up with their own House System.

A lot of the stuff came from A/C kids.

Activities director and history teacher Jennifer Betz talked more about what the house system is.

Every house has 7-12 grade students as well as staff, so the students are building these cross-grade relationships. They are focusing in on leadership develop, and each house has a leader, sometimes an adult, sometimes a student.

The students learn collaboration and problem solving in the houses and it encourages healthy competition.

Broersma talked about how the students created their houses.

The students can earn points, and each house can earn points as well. There is an app that parents can get to see how their students are preforming in their house.

Two visitors, Jeremy Williams and Brady McLean, attended the meeting to talk to the board about a self-defense class that the school is considering adding to the physical education classes. This will be the subject of a future story.

In other business, the board heard a report from Jennifer Betz, activities and athletics director, who talked about the Christmas concert and encouraged the community to give feedback on this year’s concert.

The board also approved the application for five out-of-district students and reviewed the school’s mission statement.

They approved the appointment and swore in the new board member, Gina Hackett, and elected new board officers. Karis Prusak will retain the chairmanship; vice-chairman will be Kelly Little; Treasurer is Debra Guyer; and Gina Hackett voted in as clerk. BOCES representative and alternate will be Deb Guyer and Kelly Little. Clear Creek Recreation District representatives will be Dusty and Gina Hackett.

Superintendent Christensen gave an update on the parking lots, the greenhouse and the water system. He also talked about the Arvada property, and the board discussed making sure the property was listed on more Realtor sites as residential property instead of commercial. There are five lots and a 3400 square foot building. For more information on the property contact the Arvada/Clearmont School.
