With the world of computers continuously changing, some Sheridan County youngsters are experimenting with how they can be used in a helpful way.

This week Sheridan College and Sheridan County School District 2 have been hosting a computer science summer camp at Coffeen Elementary School.

Through simple experiments, youngsters have been learning how technology is used to do things such as explore and retrieve foreign objects from space as well as ocean exploration and cleanup.

Abby Hurley is the Sheridan College Computer Science Youth Outreach Coordinator.

She says the camp is designed to teach children how computer science can help with problem solving, and to make them more aware of how much computer science is in today’s world.

“Robots are actually all around us, all the time and we don’t even notice it, especially the younger kids. They don’t know the dishwasher is actually a robot. They don’t know that inside of your car, there are many different computer components that are telling your car to do different things, or giving different signals to you to keep you safe, and then we’re also thinking too in the future, how are robots going to continue to infiltrate into our lives.”

Hurley adds this is the 5th year for the camp, and a little more than 100 students participated this year.
