About two weeks after classes start is when colleges and universities find out how their enrollment numbers are doing.

For the University of Wyoming, the new numbers showed mixed results.

UW’s overall enrollment of 10,913 is down 1.7 percent from 11,100 in fall 2022, although the number of students from Wyoming is up by 4 percent.

The number of incoming freshmen was down by about 10%, but UW says that is mostly due to a 14% drop in out of state freshmen.

President Ed Seidel says that last statistic was a concern and is one that the school’s academic recruiters are trying to address.

“We are definitely working on getting out of state numbers up as the best we can. We’re targeting digital advertising in markets that we know have people that look at the University of Wyoming and we’re not only just trying to advertise that we are the University of Wyoming, but we’re trying to make sure people know that we have new things that will be of interest to them all.”

On the flip side of things, about 77% of full-time freshmen from last year have returned.
